The hollow tree - that just keeps growing
Every year I look at this hollow tree trunk and think, well maybe it has finally died.
But then this happens.
How amazing is that? This is from the opposite angle ↓
You can literally see through it.
It was probably my mom that once told me that trees grow from a thin layer just under the bark (scientific term = cambium), to the point that it can become completely hollow and still keep growing.
So just imagine, year after year, as the tree grows, the bark gets thicker and thicker, more cracked and stiff, all to protect this thin layer of growth, right underneath.
Like putting on a nasty face to protect a little baby chick you are hiding underneath your wing.
Or, having the great big trunk get all the credit for being huge, all while the little bitty layer on the outside is doing all of the work.
Or, having that little layer pushing outwards year after year, asking the bark to keep building and stretching.
Kind of beautiful right?
Growth happens in all sorts of beautiful places.
